When I moved to Groningen, the Jeugdsjoel was incredibly welcoming and gave me a social life again. Without it, I would've been lonely without community. The community is always there when I need something. Save the Jeugdsjoel!
i grew up in an abusive household and i have always struggled with feeling at home or feeling like i have a family. someone and someplace that has my back. luckily i was able to find shelter and solice at the jeugdsjoel. it’s filled with beautiful caring people that take care of each other. it provides housing to people in need. food for the unhoused is cooked here. taking this place away from the community would be a huge step backwards and a big loss for many people that need it.
The Jeugdsjoel helped out when Spaces (international poetry community based in Gro) needed a place to rehearse for an art event! They let us use their space which helped with organization a lot. The community is also somewhere people can go to for help, or to borrow/ take supplies and clothes. They have already helped people and will help any more if they can keep their space. They are even on good terms with the neighborhood cats!
P.S. When I visited there were some skateboards around and I tried my luck with one. Everyone there was very supportive of my sad sad attempts to do a trick. It's truly a safe space.
Sjoel is a welcoming and safe place for people, especially for those in need. I found that Sjoel always is a place where one can find some funny jokes, some warm hugs, some good food. You can find a lot of the things one might need to smile. Sjoel like a little patch of clear blue sky among the clouds. You can find one of the best kitchens staffed with amazing chefs and sometimes live music from a jam. It's so safe that I sometimes come there when I feel overwhelmed, just to get some peace of mind. Their garden really helps with that. Each time I visit it I can see more work and love put into it, just like in the entire house. I can clearly see that for the people there this is not a shelter, but a home. I am also grateful because the love they put in their home also goes back to the community.
The sjoel has such an importance in the queer and artist communities of the city
I love the Sjoel, they helped me get mobility aid when my own government refused to. They've done so much good for the community and I'm afraid of how cold the city would feel if we lost it.
I just like and love these very nice and beautiful people Support them as much as you can. No pasaran
The Sjoel has become one of the very few places where I feel completely safe and welcomed with all my queerness. I think the city needs more spaces like this, where you can either eat delicious food weekly or have a cup of tea and a cute hang out. It feels so refreshing and caring to have a space where queer people feel seen and safe outside of the nightlife. It helps built community and that’s really important for our society. It would be a great pain for many people to have this space taken away from us.
Thank you Sjoel for being so open and welcoming <3
I've been to Jeugdsjoel several times and every time it felt so special. It feels like home. The conversations that are happening there are so sweet and lovely, the music is fun, the food is amazing and the connections between people are so warm and lovely. We maybe didn't know each other an hour ago but it doesn't matter, we are united and it feels like we know each other for years. There are no other places like that in Groningen and I hope so much that this one will be saved. Thank you all kindly
The sjoel is a wonderful place ran by lovely people who really make you feel at home. It is a safe space where you can be yourself and create new bonds. Long live the sjoel!
Sjoel invited me in after an event in the city a few months ago that also had some people from the sjoel there, and I have been there quite a few times since. It's an incredibly welcoming place, especially for queer people like myself, in a city where we are losing queer spaces every single year.
Last year for a few months I needed a place to stay as I was helping out another friend get housing by staying at my own place, the people at the sjoel were very sweet and accomodating and very quickly let me crash in a spare room for as long a I needed. I really think this place is filled with warm hearted people and gives a safe-space and community to many people in the city <3
Over the past year, the sjoel has become a place for me to find friends, queer community, and the occasional warm plate of tasty food. I've learned so much about myself here that I couldn't elsewhere, and it's a place where I can feel at home. I hope it never disappears.
I really love the Jeugdsjoel <3 <3 <3. It’s a wonderful place where people can come together and share a meal, or share their thoughts. It would be such a shame if a place which has made so many queer people feel at home would suddenly disappear.
I've visited the Jeugdsjoel many times since 2023 for different events such as the community kitchen, queer movie nights and political events. I really hope the lovely people running it can keep doing so, there's no other place like this in Groningen and very importantly it's a queer safe space of which there are too few in these tumultuous times 🩵
This was the first place in Groningen that felt like home after 5 years of living here. Big thank you to the people who helped build it <3 I really hope this community space lives on
