Mother’s Day Movie Night – Witches (2024)

Organised by @groningenfeministnetwork

Movie TW: suicidal ideation, mentions of self-harm, detailed descriptions of mental illness, mentions of potentially harming a child

Join us on May 7th at 8pm at the Jeugdsjoel for an educational movie night! We will be watching Witches (2024), an intimate documentary which examines the relationship between cinematic portrayals of witches and the all-too-real experiences of postpartum depression by utilizing footage that spans the entirety of film history alongside heartrending personal testimony. The film also touches on the racialized dynamics that make this terrain incredibly fraught for black and brown women. Through personal storytelling, historical context, and poetic visuals, Witches works to destigmatize women’s mental health and challenges the outdated, harmful myths that still surround motherhood. It questions the expectations placed on women to effortlessly transition into motherhood and endure its hardships silently, exposing the societal pressures and lack of support that can lead to devastating consequences. All in all, Elizabeth Sankey concocts a potion that brims with courage, compassion, and healing insight.

There will be a small discussion following the movie, which you are more than encouraged to join. We hope to see you there! 💜
